We’re seeking an experienced and technically strong Senior Electrical/Assets Engineer (Transmission Lines & HV Cables) to provide senior technical stewardship across AusNet’s transmission line and high‑voltage cable assets. In this role, you’ll deliver expert engineering leadership across the full asset lifecycle, ensuring assets are safe, reliable, compliant and fit for long‑term operation—enabling AusNet’s transition to a Net Zero energy future.
As a key technical authority, you’ll play a critical role in protecting and optimising the value of our transmission network by applying sound engineering judgement, shaping asset strategies and standards, and influencing high‑quality technical decision‑making across planning, delivery, operations and incident response. Your expertise will support consistent, risk‑based outcomes while balancing performance, safety and commercial considerations.

What you’ll be doing in this role:
- Technical Authority & Engineering Judgement: Act as the technical authority for transmission lines and HV cables (up to 500 kV), applying sound engineering judgement to ensure assets are safe, compliant, reliable and fit for long‑term operation.
- Asset Strategy & Performance: Own discipline‑specific asset strategies and management plans, proactively managing performance, condition, maintenance and lifecycle risk to protect long‑term asset value.
- Asset Risk & Failure Management: Lead engineering investigations into asset failures and emerging risks, delivering robust root‑cause analysis and practical recommendations to prevent recurrence.
- Investment & Lifecycle Decisions: Provide accountable engineering input to investment, replacement and augmentation decisions, balancing cost, risk, performance, constructability and whole‑of‑life outcomes.
- Contestable Project Assurance: Provide engineering assurance across contestable transmission line and HV cable projects, ensuring alignment with standards, safety expectations and long‑term operability.
- Standards & Compliance: Develop and govern engineering standards and Owner’s Requirements, ensuring compliance with legislative, regulatory, safety and contractual obligations.
- Operational Readiness & Emergency Support: Ensure assets are ready for operation and recovery, including repair and recommissioning strategies and expert technical support during incidents.
- Continuous Improvement & Leadership: Drive innovation and improved engineering practices, share lessons learned, and role‑model strong safety leadership, professionalism and AusNet values.
You don’t need to check every box; however, we’re looking for a good combination of:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent recognised under the Washington Accord). Postgraduate qualifications in Engineering or Asset Management are highly regarded.
- 7+ years’ experience within the electricity industry, with strong exposure to asset management and lifecycle engineering in asset‑owning or operating organisations.
- CPEng from Engineers Australia or equivalent and RPEV or eligible obtain from BLA-Victoria
- Demonstrated senior‑level experience in electricity transmission, ideally across transmission lines and high‑voltage cable systems up to 500 kV.
- Strong capability in asset lifecycle management, including asset strategies, maintenance planning, condition assessment, failure management and reliability improvement.
- Knowledge & experience of transmission line muddling/design with PLS-CADD/TOWR/POLE or similar software
- Knowledge & experience of Lighting, Earthing, Audible Noise & EMF studies with CDEGS or similar software.
- Understanding of cable muddling/design with CYMCAP or similar software
- Proven ability to apply sound engineering judgement and deliver clear, defensible technical advice in safety‑critical, highly regulated environments.
- Conduct asset health and risk assessments and prepare condition reports. Provide dynamic technical support to field technicians and external service providersExperience contributing engineering input to capital projects and contestable assets, including concept designs, scope development, technical specifications and review of contractor designs.
- Solid understanding of Australian and international standards, regulatory frameworks and industry codes, with experience supporting audits, investigations and assurance activities.
- Well‑developed stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the confidence to work autonomously as a senior technical contributor while collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.
