Location:

Victoria, Australia

Employment Type:  Permanent Full Time
Description:

  • Two exciting opportunities available — due to growth, we’re expanding our Commercial & Connections legal team with both a Legal Counsel and Senior Legal Counsel position.
  • Be at the centre of Australia’s energy transition, contributing legal expertise to major transmission, infrastructure and distributed energy projects shaping Victoria’s cleaner future.
  • Highly impactful, meaningful work where your advice directly influences commercial outcomes, customer connections and delivery of critical energy projects.

As Victoria accelerates toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future, AusNet is growing rapidly to meet the moment. With major projects ramping up across our Development & Future Networks division and our transmission business, we now have several exciting new Legal Counsel & Senior Legal Counsel opportunities available.

If you're a commercially savvy lawyer who wants meaningful work, complex challenges, and the chance to support projects that power millions of people — this is your next move.

About the role

As a Legal Counsel or Senior Legal Counsel supporting our Commercial & Connections portfolio, you’ll play a critical role in enabling AusNet’s core commercial objectives. Working across both regulated and unregulated environments, you’ll provide pragmatic, timely legal advice that directly supports the projects and partnerships driving Australia’s energy transition.

Your work will span commercial agreements, infrastructure contracts, distributed energy projects, planning and property issues, and claims — giving you exposure to some of the most important energy developments happening in the country.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll partner closely with project leads, technical experts and senior stakeholders to:

  • Draft and negotiate commercial agreements for transmission and distribution connection services
  • Support procurement and construction of major energy infrastructure
  • Advise on distributed energy initiatives including metering, battery storage and clean mobility
  • Provide guidance on planning and property matters
  • Manage and resolve claims
  • Develop and streamline legal templates and processes
  • Work with external legal advisors where required

This is a role where you’ll be both an advisor and a problem‑solver — helping us deliver safely, effectively and with commercial clarity.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • A tertiary qualification in law (e.g. Bachelor of Laws)
  • 4–9 years’ legal experience in-house or private practice, ideally with exposure to construction or energy matters
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A professional, approachable style when engaging with stakeholders
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • High levels of self‑motivation, accountability and autonomy
  • A collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively across teams
  • Strong organisational and prioritisation skills to manage multiple demands
  • Sharp analytical thinking and sound commercial judgement
  • A genuine commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive team culture
