We’re looking for a Director, Technical Engineer to join our team - This role is accountable for ensuring all engineering design, technical standards, and system integration activities meet regulatory requirements, industry best practice, and the project’s safety, quality, and performance expectations.
Reporting to the General Manager, Delivery, the Director, Technical Engineering leads the project’s Technical Engineering function, ensuring it is appropriately resourced with the right engineering expertise. You will be responsible for the timely delivery of high‑quality technical information and advice, enabling confident decision‑making and supporting successful project delivery and strong technical outcomes.
The Western Renewables Link (WRL) project team sit within Development and Future Networks and is the largest transmission build of its kind in more than three decades. WRL is a critical piece of transmission infrastructure required to deliver energy from wind and solar farms in western Victoria to homes across the state and to the National Electricity Market.
What you’ll be doing in this role:
- Act as the project’s technical authority, setting engineering strategy and direction and ensuring all design, standards, and system integration activities meet regulatory, safety, quality, and performance requirements.
- Provide technical leadership and oversight of delivery partners, ensuring alignment across client and partner engineering teams and resolving complex technical and interface issues.
- Establish and maintain engineering governance and assurance frameworks, including design reviews, verification processes, and approval of technical standards, specifications, and key engineering deliverables.
- Lead the Technical Engineering function, ensuring it is appropriately resourced, capable, and high‑performing, with clear accountability for safety, performance, and professional development.
- Enable successful project delivery through cross‑directorate leadership, proactively managing interdependencies, risks, and system impacts using a whole‑of‑project, systems‑thinking approach.
- Own technical risk management and compliance, ensuring adherence to PSDR, contractual obligations, Australian Standards, and organisational engineering requirements, and representing the project in regulatory and audit forums.
- Hold full accountability for the technical engineering budget, managing cost, risk, variations, and forecasting to ensure delivery within approved project and phase budgets.
- Provide expert technical advice to executive and governance forums, supporting informed decision‑making through clear, timely, and risk‑based engineering input.
You don’t need to check every box, however we’re looking for a good combination of:
- Tertiary qualification in Engineering, or the equivalent
- 10+ years’ experience in technical / engineering space within complex infrastructure environment
- Relevant experience in critical capital projects ($2Bn+).
- Senior leadership experience in Technical Engineering within major infrastructure, energy, utilities, or construction projects.
- Demonstrated experience working within or alongside a delivery partner or alliance model.
- Demonstrated experience in collaboration and building productive relationships across an organisation.
- Experience in working cross-functionally in large teams
- Strong executive presence with the ability to challenge constructively and drive accountability.
- Broad industry and project experience on large infrastructure projects with expert knowledge and understanding of technical workstreams
- Experience working on ITC Contracts or government led procurement projects will be an advantage
- Enthusiasm and energy for working in high-functioning multi-faceted teams with an ultimate single measure of success (i.e. project delivery)
- Strong communication and influencing skills at all levels of management, including technical and C-Suite.
- Working knowledge of the National Electricity Rules (NER) as related to technical performance requirements of generation and transmission infrastructure.
